So I awoke today with a splitting sinus headache that is just now abating. I got in late from Christmas Eve as me and my wife were helping my sister-in-law wrap presents from Santa and place them under the tree. And it was freezing last night here and had snowed all day so I left tired and cold.
Soon after waking I drove to my mother-in-law’s house and picked up my wife who wanted to see her nephews open their Santa gifts. When I got there she was in the midst of Playmobil assembly and the kids were preparing to leave for my sister-in-law’s husband’s side of the family visit. This was not what I had in mind for a relaxing Christmas.
I had visions of staying in my pajamas all day and just canoodling with my wife on the catch binge watching whatever shows we had fallen behind on during the past year and dining on leftovers. No such luck.
Instead, I spent the greater part of the day helping her assemble the Playmobil Ghostbusters house and car. Sounds simple, but there were myriad tiny parts and it took (what felt like) forever. The her sister and family had already left so as we headed out, we wanted to check on the dog.
She fed him, walked him and we played with him for a bit, knowing that he wouldn’t get any attention for quite some time. We prayed they wouldn’t stay out late.
Then we had to head to the recycling center and recycle some of the toy boxes and get rid of some evidence for the parents. Then we had to take out trash and recycling.
Then I had to call my dad and brother, who I hadn’t even talked to yet.
And the day is pretty much over. I did get to watch the season finale of Insecure, so that was nice. But now I’m going to set up my mother-in-law’s new Chromebook we just got her so when she returns from visiting a daughter who lives downstate, she’ll be up and running.
Ugh. Not so very Merry Christmas. In fact, it’s probably one of the more solemn feeling ones I’ve had. Bah humbug.
And Merry Christmas anyway.
